Welcome to Beyond the Mesh. I’m Dominique Madier and I’m glad you’re here.
Beyond the Mesh is a publication for engineers who want to think more clearly about finite element analysis. Through essays, case studies, and practical frameworks, I share what I’ve learned building and validating FEA models over more than 25 years, so you can move from running simulations to understanding them.
For nearly three decades, I’ve worked as a stress and FEA engineer across aerospace and structural analysis, building models, reviewing them, and mentoring the engineers who build them next. I’ve seen results that looked convincing and were wrong. I’ve seen engineers who could operate the software fluently but couldn’t explain why their model was trustworthy. And I’ve seen how often the difference between a credible analysis and a costly mistake comes down to a handful of modeling decisions that no software manual ever teaches.
That gap between operating the software and understanding the physics is what this publication exists to close.
Engineering Judgment
FEA software has become more powerful and more accessible every year. That is mostly a good thing. But it has also created a quiet risk: it is now easier than ever to produce a result without understanding whether that result means anything.
A convergence plot is not the same as a converged answer. A colorful stress contour is not the same as engineering judgment. And a model that runs without error is not the same as a model that reflects reality. The gap between clicking through a simulation and standing behind its result is where most of the expensive mistakes in this field happen, and it is rarely a software problem. It is a thinking problem.
This publication is my attempt to address that directly: not with more tutorials on how to use the tools, but with the judgment, the process, and the fundamentals that determine whether the tools are being used well.
